My car intermittently will not start. I crank and crank and finally it will start. Then you can smell fuel. This problem happens occasionally. Usually after it has been running and then stopped for a few minutes. It never seems to do it on initial start after sitting for a long time.

The same thing happened my 99 Jetta. My husband and I got it looked at by a very reliable mechanic (Midas, fyi) and they said it was the ignition coil. We had to get it diagnosed and replaced, which all cost about 400 (a lot less than I was worried it would be). We never smelled fuel, but I bet anything that's what your problem is. Anyway, best of luck!

I own a 2001 VW jetta 4 cylinder automatic engine ...I just changed my gasket due to a very bad over heating that caused the plastic covering inside the top cylinder to melt with the engine oil. which also spoilt the oil pump. Now all these things are now fixed but the car will start and after 15-20mins drive it will stop and won't start until after 40-60 mins later when the engine cools off...we have tried changing the coil same problem any help... please I have spen over $1,000 to get to this stage....
