Are round-trip tickets really necessary to get a Visa? Can I get a plane ticket in and a train out?

I understand that I need a round-trip ticket to get a russian visa. But in the case that I don't want to return home at the end of the visa period but travel by train to a neigboring country to get a new visa and therefore extend the russian stay, can I get a train ticket out and present that as an alternative plan?

Thanks so much for the advice.

If you want to get Russian visa, you need to get a tourist invitation or a business invitation. Always remember that multiple-entry visas cannot extend. If you want o stay more in Russia then you will need a new visa. For this you can apply for a new invitation for a visa during the period of visa validation. When your invitation letter is prepaired, you should leave Russia before your old visa expires and get a new one from any Russian Consulate abroad. Only the citizens of the listed countries should get their visas in their native countries. Visas and passport is necessary for all foreign visitors to Russia. To get one, you must show confirmed accommodations for virtually every night of your visit, though there are ways around this. It is important that you keep your visa safe as its loss can make it quite impossible to leave the country. Remember, it is important that you have not only Russian incoming tourist visa, but also privileged permission to entry to Tiksi, because it is situated in military zone very near from state line of Russian Federation.
