Assassins creed 2 help!

I am at a point in assassins creed 2 where I have gone back into the game as the person from the future but cant seem to do anything, It registers a target in gold and as i chase them it wont allow me to catch them? Any ideas of what to do at this stage

    i had the old syrian sword and i went to the black smith and bought a war hammer how do i get my sword back it wont let me buy it again and i dnt know wut to do because my sowrd is better n this hammer sux
