With a central midfield choice between Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry, Manchester United's Michael Carrick needs to show improvement on the bigger stages to ever be anything other than a substitute in England's WC qualifier against Croatia.

    It is fair to say, injury has disrupted Michael Carrick's progression since moving to Manchester United and, as a result, he has never had a run in the England team.

    He is still a good back-up to Barry, Lampard and Gerrard.
