The Monterey Bay Aquarium is sited on the former site of a sardine cannery on Cannery Row of the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey, California. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors. It holds thousands of plants and animals, representing 623 separate named species on display. The aquarium benefits by a high circulation of fresh ocean water which is obtained through pipes which pump it in continuously from Monterey Bay.

When you're out there, you realize that you're on a sort of desert, watery but desolate. But a closer look reveals a whole universe of life found on the constantly changing palette of blues, grays and blacks that make up the colors of the water in a zone known as the "pelagic" (from the Greek) or, more commonly, the open sea.

So, as part of their extending effort to give visitors glimpses of things and locations they've not ever glimpsed before, the curators of the Monterey Bay Aquarium have opened "The Open Sea" a exclusive display trying to duplicate an locality of the Pacific Ocean roughly 200 miles from the coastlines of Monterey.

It's a locality they have nicknamed the realm of the "the vast and the fast," for its dimensions and deepness, and for the lightning-quick races of the killers that reside there. What utilized to be renowned as the "Outer Bay" galleries have undergone a comprehensive makeover to contemplate life in some of the least-explored components of the Pacific, as asserted by David Cripe, the aquarium's exceptional displays coordinator.
