If 4.83mL of an unknown gas effuses through a hole in a plate in the same time it takes 9.23mL of Argon, Ar, to effuse through the same hole under the same conditions, what is the molecular mass of the unknown gas? (146amu)

    Graham's law of effusion/diffusion says that the rate is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass.

    R1/R2 = [m2/m1]^0.5
    4.83 / 9.23 = [39.95 / m1]^0.5

    To solve for m1, square both sides of the equation.
    (4.83 / 9.23)^2 = (0.523)^2 = 39.95 / m1

    m1 = 39.95 / (0.523)^2 = 146 amu
