   The only way to appraise the value of a piano is for a technician to visually check out the instrument and ascertain the condition of the following;
   
   1. belly (soundboard, ribs, bridges, pinblock)
   2. strings
   3. action
   4. damper action
   5. keyboard
   6. pedal hardware
   7. lyre
   8. case/cabinet/finish.
   
   Once the above is known, a value can be determined. You can get a referral for a technician from the Piano Technicians Guild (www.ptg.org). The price range can vary from $0 to $1500 depending on the above.
   
   Assuming a thirty-five year old piano is in good condition, a tuning in preparation for a sale is a must. The sound quality is compromised when there is a lack of resonance due to inharmonicity. It would be like wearing a Brooks Brothers tuxedo to a wedding that's wrinkled.
   As for where to sell the instrument, Craigs List is one option. Other possibilities include posting fliers at church/temple/school/laundromat bulletin boards, having fliers posted at music schools and college music department boards, placing an ad at your local newspaper classifieds section, etc.
