How do sinkholes happen?
Tags: happen, sinkholes
Sinkholes are a geological phenomena that occur when acidic rain water and the like seap into the bedrock that lies underneath the surface soil. This bedrock is usally limestone or sandstone. The process involved can take hundreds or even thousands of years, eventually eating away at the material. When something is built on top of this now weakened bedrock it can often cause the bottom to literally fall out underneath it, thereby causing a sinkhole.
