How does Alexa gather Site Stats?

I was trying to extract some competitor’s website information and saw that Alexa has comprehensive stats for it. I want to know how Alexa happens to collect so much information about a website.

    Alexa gathers Site Stats from a variety of sources to provide key statistics about each site on the web. These include: Traffic Rank and Speed which are derived from Web usage information, and Other sites that link to this site, and Online Since, both of which come from Web content. Alexa toolbar is one big source for Alexa to gather most of the information.
