At least 1,700 people are now believed to have been killed in Japan's earthquake and tsunami, but the final figure is likely to be much higher.

As Japan attempted to assess the full extent of the devastation, the nation faced an atomic emergency as cooling systems damaged by the quake failed at two nuclear reactorsJapanese officials struggled Saturday to face the possibility of a meltdown at two major nuclear power plants whose emergency cooling systems were damaged by Friday's earthquake and tsunami.

It was just not the earthquake, in fact it was the other even worst disaster tsunami that caused damage to the Nuclear Plant in Japan. The jolts and banging of the big tidal waves resulted in overheating of the Nuclear reactor, thus resulting in a meltdown causing damage to the surroundings and leakage of radiations in the environment.
