I always put up my mother's tree the day after Thanksgiving, as I have the day off, and she would like to have her tree for the entire holiday season.  Her tree is fake and requires little to no care, so it can stay up a longer period of time.

I won't put my tree up until this week, maybe this weekend, and will leave it up until New Year's.  My tree is real, and requires more care.  I need to keep it alive (or looking alive) AT LEAST until Christmas.  You don't want a brown tree in your pictures.

The National Christmas tree and the tree in Rockefeller Center were both lit on the 3rd of December.  Our small town tree lighting was yesterday.  I think that any time between Thanksgiving and next weekend are fairly normal for putting up trees.

I do know families that put up their tree very late and decorate it on Christmas Eve as a tradition.  It seems like a lot of work for very little enjoyment for me.

I would say put up the tree when you and your family are ready to start enjoying/caring for a tree.  If you have gifts that you want to start putting around the tree and getting your family excited about Christmas, then it's time to set up the tree.  If things are still crazy, you won't enjoy putting it up and you won't enjoy it.  Slow down life, put on some Christmas music, and put up your tree on your own time.

    I hope that helps.
