   Here's how to prepare an outline for a speech you are giving, no matter what the setting or the topic of the speech may be. First fill in each of the topics below as a way of helping you think through your speech. I've given an example next to each. Take your general purpose, add your topic to it, add a few qualifiers to that, and you have your specific purpose. Example: To inform my audience about the three main causes for the rise of skin cancer among teens in the last decade in the United States. Now that you know specifically what you want to speak about, outlining becomes much easier. In fact, you can often sense or see the outline in your thesis statement. So consider your thesis statement and then decide if one of these approaches to outlining your main point might work. Now organize your outline this way, with the first and last parts being paragraphs.
