Being a university professor of public speaking as well as a public relations professional, I have seen how a poorly written persuasive speech will decrease a speaker's credibility resulting in less people being moved to take action. The ultimate goal of an persuasive speech is to create, reinforce, or change your audience members' beliefs or actions. Knowing how to construct an effective persuasive speech will benefit anyone who is trying to get people to agree with you, get people to take a particular action, or accomplish change of any sort. Before you begin, you must agree to tailor your message to your audience members' values, attitudes, and beliefs. Since persuasive speaking is the most complex and challenging form of public speaking, it is important to convey your credibility on the subject matter. It is always important to establish good character and credibility in public speaking; however, with persuasive public speaking this is even more crucial to getting your audience to take an action. This must be done without appearing too paternalistic or talking above your audience. Public speaking is a strategic game, where you are constantly engaging in a mental dialogue with the audience. Meaning that your eyes never leave the audience.

Nick Morgan talks a lot about how to craft a persuasive speech. You can find a link to all his speech writing advice here: http://publicwords.typepad.com/nickmorgan/1-speech-writing/
