Planning a speech to give to children entails the same process as any speech. Plan, outline, rehearse and, finally, give your speech. Children, however, present issues not present with adult audiences. When preparing a speech for children remember to catch and hold your young audience's fleeting attention, appeal to special-needs children and achieve a concise, yet conversational speech. Write to your audience. Take into consideration the audience's ages, backgrounds and educational level. Think about how you can capture their attention. If, for example, you are going to speak to a group of second graders on career day, speak to their level of comprehension. If you are a firefighter, speak in colorful terms about aspects of your profession the children can relate to, such as your uniform and the fire engine. Talk about fire safety in simple terms to let them know they can prevent fires in important ways. Keep your talking points to no more than two topics. This keeps kids from becoming confused and holds their interest in what you are saying. If you are a firefighter speaking on a school career day, tell a personal story about how you decided to become a firefighter and what it means to you. Allow time for, and encourage questions.

I say do not write speeches for children. Look for stories. Children do not like to listen to a talk. They do not want to be inspired. They want you to get their attention. They want you to entertain them. When you are able to do the first two, then you can inspire them.

Tell them of stories that they can be interested. Yes, you can tell them your story when you were still young. Believe me when I say that children do not like adult talk. They want honest stories, ones that show both failure and success.
