   Whether you are attending a family function, a department meeting, a church social or a formal reception, a last-minute request for a speech can almost leave one speechless. But with just 10 minutes to spare, it is possible to write a meaningful speech that delivers the message, sounds like it took all night to prepare for, and makes you sound like the best person for the job. Identify your target audience for the speech (family, friends, strangers, stockholders, congregation, peers or competitors) and the purpose of the speech (introduction, gratitude, get-to-know-you, award). Spend the next minute or two re-reading your speech, working out how you want to tie in the three parts of the speech, and making any last-minute modifications. Be conversational in tone and empathetic to the audience. This eliminates your nervousness as well as the audience's.
