A professional and formal proposal letter will be the key to gaining support. There are no specific rules for the format of a formal proposal, but all proposal letters should motivate the reader to understand your plans, goals and needs.

Type your introductory paragraph in which you will describe the reason for your proposal. Include background information that supports the research, product or business idea that you have in place. Explain any problems that may exist, but do not write specifically about how you will solve them yet.

Present your objectives and specific plan of action for implementing and maintaining your project or business in the second paragraph. Make direct correlations to the "problems" or challenges and the solutions achieved as a result of your plan. Mention who will be involved (other than you and the investors), and where business will take place. You may also briefly list expertise or experience you have that will enable these processes. Include your method of evaluation of your work and be sure to explain how you will prove your success using scheduled "showing dates" so that the client, bank or investor will trust that the money spent on your idea is yielding positive results. Be clear and concise, but this section is usually the longest and can be several pages if necessary.

Type the needs section of your proposal. Clearly explain the budget necessary to carry out the project and if appropriate, itemize and show where the funds will be applied. This also serves as your request paragraph; you are asking for the financial backing of the bank or investor.

Type your conclusion paragraph. Reassure the bank or investor of your confidence to perform and succeed in your idea and that their investment will benefit both parties. Mention that upon approval, you would like to move to the next step of the process.

Create a "References" section at the end of your proposal. You may list many references, but be sure to only include those relevant to the field, career or project you are proposing. These references can include written data which support your introductory and proposal paragraph, as well as the traditional concept of references, such as on a resume.
