Writing a book can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Seeing your name on a cover of the shelf in a local bookstore is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.
Of course, before you can get on the shelves, you first have to write a book, and before you write a book, you have to produce your book proposal and sell a publishing company on your idea.

Plan your book idea fully. This should not just be an idea that pops into your head, but should be one that you are passionate about. As a test run to see if you really can run with a book idea, write a couple chapters and do a loose plan.

Research who you want to propose your book to. There are hundreds of publishers across North America, so make sure you are pitching to the right company. Online resources like publishersglobal.com or organizations like the American Association of Publishers or the Association of Canadian Publishers will have listings that will help you narrow your search.

Speak to a publisher to find out how to submit your proposal. You will want to look on the publisher website to see who your primary contact will be. Some publishing houses will list division heads or others will just have general contacts listed. This first conversation will also help give you some recognition when the publisher receives your pitch. As well, before you make the call, check their website for any information on how to submit your proposal.

Write your proposal, remembering to be thorough, yet brief enough that you don't overwhelm a publisher. A proposal should not be more than one page in length, and should be detailed enough that your publisher will get a good idea of what you are working towards.

Remember that while a book may be a passion for you, it's a business for the publishers, and their bottom line will be making money on your book. Therefore, help speak the publisher's language by providing them with some marketing elements, including target audience, your willingness to promote and tour the book and other benefits for working with you.
