Athens is named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The Greek story behind it was Athena and Poseidon both wanted to be the patrons of the city and competed with each other by offering a gift. Poseidon produced a spring by striking the ground with his trident, symbolizing naval power. Athena created an olive tree, which symbolized peace and prosperity. The Athenians accepted the olive tree and named their city Athens, after the God of Wisdom.
