The total number of the India’s population is one billion, around half of whom are adults in the sexually active age group. The premier AIDS case in India was reported in 1986 and since then HIV infection has been reported in all cities and union territories. The spread of HIV in India has been not uniform; however much of India has a less rate of infection, but on the same time several places have been more affected than others. HIV epidemics are more serious in the southern half of the country and the far north-east. The highest HIV prevalence is discovered in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the south; and Manipur and Nagaland in the north-east. In the southern region, HIV is basically spread through hetero sexual relations. Infections in the north-east are mainly discovered amongst injecting drug users (IDUs) and s*x employees. Earlier it was believed that around 5 million people were living with HIV in India, which is a great number than in any other country. But according to new researches it is proved that around 2.3 million people in India are living with HIV positive. Out of these numbers 39 percent are female and 3.5% are children. The authorities of controlling programs said that HIV prevalence in India may have reduce slightly in present years, though the epidemic is still increasing in some area and population groups. NACO releases HIV data every year based on data collection from HIV Sentinel Surveillance sites. During 2007 surveillance was held at 1134 sites and 358,797 samples were tested for HIV. The sites conduct tests on the high-risk groups and among antenatal clinic attendees. Data gathered from the antenatal clinics are then utilized as a tool for the general population.
