The bowel cancer is often regarded as an older person's disease, but the latest medical research shows bowel cancer is increasingly affecting younger Australians. Every year, 4,500 die from bowel cancer and doctors say they are now seeing many patients in their 20s and 30s.
It is the most common internal cancer found in Australian men and women. It is predicted that just under 13,000 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer this year, while 4,500 of them are expected to die.
