Is there a way to get our VTech 5.8 GHz phone set working properly again?

We have a Vtech 5.8 GHz cordless set (3 phones). The answering machine messages are garbled beyond recognition, and most of the time we cannot dial out on any of the sets. We can receive phone calls with no problems. What should we do? Thanks.
