Since May 2010, Toyota Motor Company have long been working together in order to develop the second generation of RAV4 and it is done by the Telsa’s electric motor and also the Toyota’s platform and body. It is now developed by the Telsa and Toyota Technical Center in USA in Michigan. It was a prototype that was built within three weeks and it underwent the testing by the July 2010.

In the November 2010 Los Angeles auto show a second generation RAV4 EV demonstrator was shown to the public. Toyota has a plan to build 35 of these converted RAV4s for as demonstration and the evaluation program that will run through the year 2011. The lithium metal-oxide battery and the other power train components were supplied by the Tesla Motors. The RAV4 EV was one of the finalists to the year 2011 to win the Green Car Vision award. The second generation RAV4 EV production models use the SAE J1772 charging standards. RAV 4 EV pre- production prototypes were first released in a confidential evaluation program with the electric utilities throughout the US. These prototypes were based on smaller, shorter and two door version of RAV4.

Each of these prototypes have a 660 pound lithium ion battery pack with a 50 kWh total capacity, and the estimated range of 80 to 120 mi.
