Latin to English translation help

I'm having trouble translating these two sentences in context.

I don't understand the use of the double datives in this sentence.

Moribus malis Romanorum insidiae Catilinae curae Ciceroni erant.

Magister litteris Graecis optimus sed usu telorum paulo doctior est.

    Translated Latin to English:

    Instructor letter Graecis best but usu telorum gradually doctior is.
