I am in US presently and I have to renew my Portuguese identity card. To do so, I need my Portuguese birth certificate but I want to get it online. I need guidance on how to get it done online? Although there is a website http://www.portaldocidadao.pt/PORTAL/pt/ advised by someone but I do not know Portuguese. Therefore, I need someone to guide me with the procedure step by step.

First of all I would like to tell you that you need not to worry about your birth certificate. This is because if you already have a Portuguese ID, then you do not need your birth certificate. All what you have to do is either show your Portuguese passport or your ID in the Embassy or Consulate. There is no reason that why they should not accept either form of identification. Just in case if you are not able to find out or get your birth certificate and at the same time if you are going to renew your ID. This would means that your citizenship as Portuguese has already been revised. One this is done then you should not need your birth certificate to prove it. The best thing to do under the circumstances would be to consult a lawyer who is expert in handling such cases. There would be many people like you in the US and not all of them could be carrying their birth certificates all the way from their own countries.
