Generally speaking, we can say that Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of 31st October. The traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, and costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand. The word Halloween derived from the Catholic Church. It's also known as All Hallows Eve, but in the 15th century it was known as nothing more than Samhain, the Celtic New Year which was celebrated on October 31st. Some of the villagers believed that disembodied spirits (the people who had passed last year) were to come back on Halloween and come back to posses the living for the next year. The purpose of Halloween is to dress up and dress the children up to scare away the bad spirits. This tradition is now a candy manufacturer’s money maker. The custom of Trick or treating, which now is the whole purpose of Halloween, was thought to have come from ninth-century European custom called soling. Costumes and masks being worn at Halloween goes back to the Celtic traditions of attempting to copy the evil spirits or placate them, in Scotland for instance where the dead were impersonated by young men with masked, veiled or blackened faces, dressed in white.
