In A Kestrel for a knave Billy has something he treasures and cares for. It is his bird Kes. In the end he looses kes because his brother Jud killed it. Likewise in Beka Lamb, Beka cherishes her best friend Toycie. But she also ends up loosing Toycie when she died tragically by a tree limb falling and crushing her
  6. Guest6610
    well both are very boring

In the opening pages of the book we see Billy and his brother Jud sleeping in the same bed in a deprived household. Billy tries to encourage Jud to get up to go to work, but Jud only responds by punching him. Soon afterwards Billy attempts to leave for his paper round, only to discover that Jud has stolen his bicycle. As a result, Billy is late and has to deliver the newspapers on foot.

Billy returns home to find a man whom he does not recognise leaving his house. He asks his Mum, and finds out that this person is Reg, the man she had come home with the night before. It becomes obvious to the reader that Billy's dad is absent. Mum then tells him to go to the shop to get some cigarettes but instead he steals a book from the local bookstore. He returns home to read it. Jud comes back drunk from a night out. The next scene takes place at a farm, in a flashback. Billy sees a kestrels nest and approaches it. Billy is then approached by the farmer and his daughter. at first the farmer tells Billy to "Bugger off" but when he realizes that Billy was looking for a kestrel, he soon takes an interest. This farmer is the first and only character in the book that actually listens to Billy. The flashback ends.

Later on in the day, Billy is at school, where Mr Crossley is taking the register. After the name Fisher, Billy shouts out 'German Bight', a reference to the BBC Shipping Forecast, inadvertently causing the teacher to make a mistake. The class then proceeds to the hall for an assembly run by the strict head teacher, Mr Gryce. During the Lord's Prayer, Billy starts to daydream, and after the prayer has finished, Billy remains standing after the rest of the people in the hall have sat down. Billy is told to report to Gryce's room after assembly. Billy goes to Gryce and gets caned. He then goes to a class with Mr Farthing, who is discussing 'Fact and Fiction'. One of the pupils, Anderson, tells a story about tadpoles. Then Billy is told to tell a story, and tells a story about his kestrel. Mr Farthing takes an interest. The class then has to write a tall story, and Billy writes about a day when his father comes back home and Jud leaves to go to the army. After the lesson Billy gets into a fight with a boy called MacDowall, which is eventually broken up by Mr Farthing.

After break, Billy goes to PE with Mr Sugden. Billy has no PE kit, because his mother refuses to pay for it, so he is forced to wear clothes that do not fit. He goes onto the football pitch, and is told to play in goal. After a very long lesson, which involves Billy performing acrobatics on the goalpost, the class goes back inside and each has a shower. Billy is humiliated by Mr Sudgen who forces him to take a cold shower. After this, Billy goes straight home to feed Kes. He takes her out and flies her, and is approached by Mr Farthing, who is apparently impressed by Billy's skill. Mr Farthing then leaves, and Billy goes out to place Jud's bet. However, he finds out that the horse that Jud intends to bet on is unlikely to win, and instead uses Jud's money to buy a portion of chips, and some meat for his kestrel.

Billy returns back to school, and whilst sitting in a maths lesson sees Jud walking towards the school. The lesson finishes, and Billy leaves hurriedly. He tries to hide from Jud before he bumps into Gryce, who reminds him that he is supposed to be in a Youth Employment Meeting. Billy goes along to his Youth Employment Meeting, and the Youth Employment Officer finds it very difficult to recommend anything, as Billy claims that he has no hobbies. After the Youth Employment Meeting, Billy goes straight home and finds that Kes has disappeared. He frantically searches for her, and returns home. Jud is there, and he tells Billy that the horse he was supposed to place a bet on won, and that he has killed Kes. Billy then calls Jud a "f****n' b*****d" and has a fight with him. His mother criticises Billy's language, and Billy runs away. Another flashback takes place in which Billy visits the cinema with his father. When they return home, Billy's father finds that his wife has been having an affair with Billy's 'Uncle Mick'. Billy's father punches Mick, and leaves the house. After the flashback has ended, Billy returns home, buries the kestrel and goes to bed.

Beka Lamb is a West Indian novel where as A Kestral.... is not. beka lamb is patriotic and kestral is reality in a poor home. they are very different they are different genders, class, country, authors, style of writing( Beka... has chapters kestrel... has none), Kestrel has a sad ending where as Beka has an ending of break through.

however the books can be compared. Both books discribed the surroundings, the serch for identity, determination, loyalty, highlighted family life, discriptive, friendship, devotion, society, change(good or bad); they both lost something they hung on to.

both books are very beautiful! it captures the reader not wanting them to return to reality. both very facinating.

A Kestrel For A Knave is a non-West Indian novel while on the other hand Beka Lamb is a West Indian novel. both texts are fundamentally different however there are similar themes portrayed in both.
      >Death- Beka loses Toycie this leads to her realizing her true strengths and it helps her to overcome her problem as a liar. Billy's changes occur while kes is alive he now avoids getting in trouble with the police but with the kestrels death bill must now overcome a new hurdle.
      >Family- in both texts the family unit is responsible for the characters growth. Beka's family supports her and helps her through her troubles (e.g Beka's mother and the note book for writing down the lies. In Billy's case there is no apparent family unit Billy's father is absent, his mother's occupation is questionable and he and his brother don't get along this does not provide Billy with anyone to emulate.
      >Man and his environment- In A Kestrel For A Knave Billy can be compared to the Thrush and the worm, the thrush is representative of society it is always pulling on Billy, the worm, after being constantly harassed the worm either gives up a succumbs to the demands of society or keeps holding on trying to be accepted. it can also be seen as Billy being the Thrush and the worm being society. Billy keeps pulling on society on till he is accepted or until he gives up. In Beka Lamb, Beka is compared to the bougainvillea it is wild and untamed, every where it grows it brings destruction(Beka was also wild and destroyed relationships trough her lies) the Bougainvillea was cut down just like Beka after the death of Toycie. The Bougainvillea and Beka grew back tamed and better.

There are more but it is advisable not to put in more than three comparison so it is not long and boring. If possible take more from the texts to support your points do so.

kestrel for a Knave is basically a west indian novel while on the other hand Beckalamb is a non west indian novel. Acomparison can be made with both novels as it relates to the protagonists status i.e. school children, their background which is their parents and family as a whole as well as the status of their background either being financially grounde or poor (superior or inferior)etc. Well, both novels are simlar in that they both consist of children attending school trying hard to make the best out of it. both also brings us to an awareness that each child had difficulty in coping with the education system because they had distracted elements in their lives. In bekalamb, beka was too concern with following friends and in kestrel for a knave billy was too concerned with his kestrel. The books are also different in that beka had a family who was there for her, who encouraged her to work hard in her school while billy had none as his mother did'nt even had time to pay for his PE kit which is essential to his learning in school. also, the difference comes with the different element that distracted the where becka was distracted by her friend and billy was distracted by his kestrel. finally, another difference evolved as beka's background was'nt quite superior but they had some amount of luxurios life wih higher mentalty while billy's background was inferior with lower mentality we se this as his mother cannot afford his PE kit or probably she does'nt have any intrest in purchasing the kit.

both novels deal with the challenges adolescent face... firstly a correction beka lamb is a west indian novel whereas a kestrel for a knave is a non-west indian novel
  13. Guest7327
NEITHER OF THEM ARE WEST INDIAN! Beka Lamb is BELIZEAN. Belize is in Central America and considered a part of the Caribbean however it's not necessarily  a part of the west indies because it is not an island. The writer was Belizean and the story takes place in Belize and shows the challenges that young Belizean adolescence face.  Where as Kestrel for a Knave took place in Britain/England.

But they both deal with adolescence and challenges they face. Although I get the impression Beka Lamb is on a more feminist point of view with issues raised like teenage pregnancy, roles of women, family issues and a little bit of racism. Kestrel for a Knave didn't really portray racism but it did raise the theme of family issues like Beka Lamb did.

even though belize in not considered west indian to most ppl.....i am west indian myself and beka lamb is a west indian novel while kestral for a knave was set in england
  15. Guest6846
Although 'Beka Lamb' is considered West Indian writing, since Belize borders the Caribbean Sea and is also a former British territory, while 'A Kestrel for a Knave' is written by a non-West Indian [British] writer, both novels deal with the the process of intiation into adulthood which an adolescent has to undergo. In both novels this is through the loss of a cherished dream.

In Beka Lamb and Kestrel for a Knave there are many similarities and differences as well.

Beka is faced with her parents being hard on her, insulting her and treating her badly, but this is for her developement and change in attitude. She is very reluctant to learn her school work and take anything seriously. Where as, Billys mother is harsh towards him, insulting by her behaviour and treats him badly without any concern about his well being. Bekah has one friend who she trusts and confides in vice versa. Billy does not have a good human friend at the first start of the novel, instead he has a bird,a kestrel who he spends most of his time later on with. This is also a difference, even though they both have something to confide in,in Bekahs case, her Toycie, and in Billys' situation his Kes. Bekah cares for her SMALLER siblings and takes them for walks with Toycie, this is a form of bonding. However Billy does not bond with his older brother Jud due to bad treatment from him. Billy and Jud has no sense of love between them, they constantly argue. Whereas Bekahs' siblings are small and not as horid as Jud.Billy bird died because of man, jud, not a natural death. However Toycies death was not purposeful.Racial discrimination occurs and is portrayed in bekah lamb however we do not see much of this in kesteral. We see that society has a huge impact on billy, and his learning.BothNovels are similar in the way that Bekah and Billy is around the same age group. They both go o school, have somethingto confide in,and lost something that meant alot to them. Bekah lost her elder dearest friend Toycie, due to a tree limb falling on her. Billy lost his kestrel because Jud killed it after he did not place a bet.
