Service engine soon Light on in Nissan Quest

Recently we had been on a long drive aprox 1100 miles in our Nissan Quest, year 2000 model. As we drove some 350 miles some kind of noise sarted coming from the van & the 'service engine soon' light came up. We drove to & fro 1100 miles & the car is running fine, but the service engine light does not go. What could be the reason, any suggestions?? I have a total of 172K miles on the van. Thankyou soo much for your valuable suggestions in the down falling economy.

    engines tightness on the head 100nm then 9 degress turn?   nissian vanette 2.3 this sound about right
