Smilodon (pronounced /'sm??l?d?n/), often called sabre-toothed cat or sabre-toothed tiger, is an extinct genus of the subfamily machairodontine saber-toothed cats endemic to North America and South America living from the Early Pleistocene through Lujanian stage of the Pleistocene epoch (1.8 mya—10,000 years ago), existing for approximately 1.790 milion years.
They are among the largest felids, the heaviest specimens of this massively built carnivore may have exceeded 400 kg (880 lb).
A Smilodon fatalis shown to scale to demonstrate the compact muscular build

A fully-grown Smilodon weighed approximately 55 to 360 kg (120 to 790 lb), depending on species. It had a short tail, powerful legs, muscular neck and long canines. Despite being around the same size as a tiger or lion, Smilodon was more robustly built, comparable to a bear.

The American lion (Panthera leo atrox) also known as the North American lion, American cave lion, is an extinct feline of the family Felidae, endemic to North America during the Pleistocene epoch (1.8 mya11,000 years ago), existing for approximately 1.789 million years.
It was one of the largest subspecies of cat ever to have existed, and the largest lion in history, slightly larger than the Early Middle Pleistocene primitive cave lion, Panthera leo fossils, and about twenty-five percent larger than the modern African lion. Some estimates of the mass of this animal are as high as 380 kg (840 pounds).

    thanks

the agility factor and advantage i believe would go in favor of the american lion over smilodon populator of simular size. unless ambushed, those huge canines would b a henderence unless the lion was menuvered n position to use it, were as the lion would be in position to bite at its lesure, stronger is not always better when dealing with bulk vs agility
