Somali pirates have threatened to retaliate after two hostage rescues by foreign forces have killed at least five of their companions. The last operation undertaken by US forces gained the release of Captain Richard Phillips. Three Somali pirates perished during the rescue operation. Recent events have raised fears of increased violence in the shipping lanes off the coast of the Horn of Africa where pirate groups have been challenged each day by the patrol of foreign naval forces.

“The French and Americans will regret having started this carnage. We do not kill, but just take ransoms. We will do anything to anyone we see as French or American now,” said Hussein, a pirate in the area.

“We will take revenge,” insisted another pirate in Eyl village, a haven for pirates in Somalia’s east coast.

Some experts now fear the reaction of the pirates after these actions. “The pirates now know that anything can happen. The French are doing this and the Americans also. Things will be more violent from hereon,” said Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers Assistance Program based in Kenya.

“Kill three of the thousands of pirates and p****y only intensifies,” said Sheikh Abdullahi Sheikh Abu Yusuf, spokesman for the moderate Islamic group Ahlu Sunna Waljamaca.
