Static on outgoing and incoming calls

Not on all calls and also cannot always answer the phone. The screen says "searching" and will keep on ringing, going to the ans. machine.

Have you tried a different phone? If not, do so. Do you have an answering machine plugged into the line? If so, disconnect it to see if that makes a difference. Ditto if you have an alarm system connected to the phone line.
