   An Iranian love triangle. A duplicate Earth. A harrowing religious cult. Sesame Street's Elmo. Only Sundance could bring them all together. The pre-eminent independent film festival announced its competition lineup Wednesday, and these were among the subjects featured in the dozens of films that will be vying for attention Jan. 20-30 in Park City, Utah. Among the highlights in the drama category: Another Earth: Two strangers (Lost's William Mapother and Brit Marling, co-writer of the film) fall in love just as a planet similar to Earth is discovered. Though the premise sounds like sci-fi, it's described as a tragic drama from writer-director Mike Cahill. Circumstance: In the midst of political and religious repression, three Iranian teenagers compete for each other's love while their generation struggles for freedom. From Iranian-American writer-director Maryam Keshavarz. Higher Ground: A first-time directing project for Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), who also stars as a wife and mother who begins to question things after a life spent in a fundamentalist cult. "Religion and faith came up a lot in movies we have this year," says Sundance director John Cooper, noting several others that are featured in the premieres section of the festival, which will be announced Thursday afternoon. Another film in this vein, Cooper says, is Martha Marcy May Marlene, starring Elizabeth Olsen as a troubled young woman who escapes a cult and tries to reconcile with her family.
