Uniden XDECT7055 dual phone-hand set not working

"Hi, I have just purchased a Uniden XDECT7055 dual phone and the extra hand set is not working. I am aware a need to register the phone to the base but I am unable to as it just says "searching" on the screen and none of the other buttons work. I have tried taking the batteries out for 10 plus mins and that doesn't work either. Please help
