Do you have "city water" or do you have a well or cistern system? If you have a well or cistern, it may be that it wasn't treated and/or sealed properly, and you may actually have mold or some other contaminant in the system. If you have city water, it may be that what you’re smelling are the chemicals that your local processing plant uses to treat the water. Does the water continue to smell if you allow it to sit for more than 12 hours? To test, just fill a glass with water and let it sit overnight If it doesn’t smell in the morning, it is likely to be water treatment chemicals. Is it just one faucet, or is it all faucets? If it is just one faucet, the fix may be as simple as cleaning out the screen and soaking it in bleach for 15 minutes before putting it back on (be sure to rinse it well before you drink water from that faucet, though!)

If you go to your local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc.) you should be able to purchase a water testing kit. If you can’t find it at a hardware store, you can also check with aquarium/fish shops – I suggest a specialty aquarium store, not a general pet store, to get a more effective testing kit. Those who are serious about their aquariums are equally serious about ensuring that the water they are using to fill it is contaminant free. That might help you narrow down the type of problem you’re actually having.

Regardless of the reason, drinking unsanitary water can lead to a host of illnesses, and it isn’t something to take lightly.  If you do find that there’s something in your water, you may need to contact a professional to take care of it properly. Until you know what you’re dealing with, you may want to consider boiling your water for at least 10 minutes before drinking it. This goes for the water you use to make ice with, too. If you have an automatic ice maker in your freezer, consider buying a few ice trays at a dollar store and foregoing the automatic ice maker ice until you know what is causing the water to have a strange odor.

This is a great answer. I will try what you suggest. In answer to your questions, it is only one faucet, I'm on city water, I have cleaned out the screen but haven't tested it. You have given me a very thorough answer and I very much appreciate it!
