    Hi,
Please note that Antarctica hasn't always been in the position it is in today. It was once part of a vast southern supercontinent, called Gondwanaland, which linked Africa, South America, India and Australia. The presence of various animal fossils in these regions helped to confirm this. For example, there were dicynodonts, such as Lystrosaurus, over much of the supercontinent. Dicynodonts were animals that were distantly related to the ancestors of mammals. They had turtle-like beaks and many species lacked teeth or only had a pair of tusks. For additional information, please go to http://www.nsf.gov/od/opp/antarct/ajus/nsf9828/9828html/a15.htm and http://geowords.com/histbooknetscape/i07.htm. The Antarctic Sun (http://antarcticsun.usap.gov/oldissues99-2000/2000_0206/conspiracy.html) has a story from the Omega Files about human-like reptiloids living in the Antarctic region in prehistoric times until pre-Nordic humans drove them underground and off the planet. The website suggests that there may be links here with the discoveries of Lystrosaurus.

Several species of dinosaurs lived in Antarctica. In fact, a whole programme of 'Walking with Dinosaurs' was made about them. The National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov/discoveries/disc_summ.jsp?cntn_id=103111&org=NSF and http://www.brightsurf.com/news/feb_04/NSF_news_022704.php) has details about sauropods and meat-eating theropods found in the region.
National Geographic (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/03/0309_040309_polardinos.html ) has additional information, as well as an artist's reconstruction of a dinosaur. It also mentions marsupials, which may have migrated from the Americas, through a warmer Antarctica, and on to Australia. Antarctic marsupials include Polydolops, distantly related to the shrew opossums of South America.

A species of wild dog, the Antarctic or Falklands wolf (Dusicyon australis), lived on the Falklands Islands. Darwin noted that it was very tame and feared that the dog would become extinct. People killed the dog as it ate some of their herds and the last dog was killed in 1876. See http://www.petermaas.nl/extinct/speciesinfo/falklandwolf.htm and http://www.worldscreatures.com/land-species/mammals/dogs/falkland-island-wolf.ht... for further information
