During 2006 UNAIDS calculated that there were 5.6 million people living with HIV in India, which denoted that there were more people with HIV in India than in any other country in the world. During 2007, following the first observation of HIV among the general population, UNAIDS and NACO agreed on a new estimate. During this period of time approximately 2 million and 3.1 million people living with HIV in India. In 2008 the number was calculated to be 2.31 million.

In 2009 it was observed that 2.4 million people were living with HIV in India, which represents to a prevalence of 0.3%.22 While this may seem low, because India's population is so large, it is third biggest country in the world in terms of greatest number of people living with HIV. With a population of around a billion, a mere 0.1% increase in HIV prevalence would maximize the estimated number of people living with HIV by over half a million.

The total HIV prevalence among women attending antenatal centers in India is 0.48%. Comparatively high percentages are discovered among people attending STD clinics and it is 3.6%, female s*x workers have 5.1%, injecting drug users make 7.2% of the infected population, and the percentage of the men who have s*x with men and have AIDS is 7.4%.
