   • Water: Irrigation is the major consumer of fresh water, and fertilizer and pesticides contaminate both surface and groundwater. Sustainable agriculture maximizes the organic matter elements in the topsoil, so raising its ability to retain and store water that falls as rain.
   
   • Biodiversity: Sustainable agricultural strategies commonly involve mixed cropping, so improving the diversity of crops produced and raising the diversity of insects and other animals and plants in and around the area.
   
   • Pollution: Different types of chemicals are hazardous to human health as well as to the local climate. Non-technical handling, storage and use of toxic chemicals lead to health and pollution problems. Sustainable agriculture minimizes or eliminates the use of hazardous chemicals; instead it controls pests with different biological and agronomic methods and the use of natural substances. Because the way agriculture is practiced contributes a lot in the global climatic changes.
