One of my friend is having pain in his joints, I would like to know about the disease Osteoarthritis, what are the symptoms of this disease? Can you tell me detail about this disease?

    Osteoarthritis is named as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, it is a group of mechanical abnormalities, that involves the degradation of joints, that include the articular cartilage and subchondral bone. The symptoms might include the joint pain, tenderness or stiffness of the joint, locking and also effusion. There is variety of causes for this disease, it can be hereditary, developmental, metabolic and mechanical, these all can lead to the initiate the process and the loss of cartilage. When the surface of the bone becomes less well protected by the cartilage, the bones might be exposed and damaged.

    As a result of the decreased movement which is secondary to the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments that might become more lax. There are almost 8 million people who are effected in the United Kingdom and almost 27 million people in the United States. Osteoarthritis is a most common joint disorder. Some of the symptoms of Osteoarthritis are:

    Intense pain in the joints that becomes worse after some physical work like exercise or by putting more weight on it and is relieved by the rest.

    Pain is worse when you start the activities after some period of no activity.

    Over some time, the pain is present even when you are at rest.

    In moist and humid weather the pain in joints increases.

    Swelling of the joints also occur

    Movement of a person becomes limited

    Weakness of the muscle around the arthritis joints occurs.
