What is ‘Behavioral Targeting’ and how it helps advertiser?

I’ve just started advertising my home based business with Google AdWords. While browsing through some related stuff I found the term ‘behavioral targeting’. Can someone please explain me what is it and how it helps an advertiser.

    Behavioral targeting is basically ad targeting based on past recent experience and/or implied intent of users. For example, if I recently searched for mortgages then am later reading a book review the page may still show me mortgage ads.
