Gastro Esophageal Reflux disease(GERD) is a medical condition in which the stomach contents like food or liquid leaks backwards from the stomach into the esophagus. This action can result in the irritation of the esophagus, which causes heartburn and other symptoms.

The most symptoms of this disease are:

Feeling that the food might be left trapped behind the breastbone

Feeling of heartburn or a burning pain in the chest under the breastbone can occur in this disease.

The pain increases by bending, stopping, lying down or eating

It also gets worsen at night

It is also relieved by antacids.

    Nauseas often happens after eating.

Some of the less common symptoms of this disease are:

    Cough or wheezing

    Difficulty swallowing

    Hiccups

    Hoarseness or change in voice

    Regurgitation of food

    Sore Throat

Basically GERD is a acid reflex disease and its chronic symptoms are caused by the stomach acid which is coming from the stomach into the esophagus. One of the most typical symptom is heartburn.

GERD is usually caused by changes in the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, that includes abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which holds the top of the stomach , impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from esophagus,or a hiatal hernia. These changes might be permanent or temporary.

Symptoms of GERD  vary from children to adult.
