What is allergy, how can we define it?

I have heard about allergies, what is the proper definition of allergy, is it a disease caused by a specific kind of virus, how can I know that I have an allergy?

    An allergy can be defined as an immune response to any particular reaction or substances, in general they are not harmful. Allergies are common nowadays and both of the genetics and environmental factors play an Important role in allergies. The immune system has the ability to protect the body against harmful substances like bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances which are known as allergens, and they are not harmful and do not cause any serious problem.

    The immune system of person becomes very sensitive because of the allergies, and the immune response is also very oversensitive. As it recognizes the allergen, the released chemical such as histamines also helps in fighting off the allergen. Allergies normally cause itching, swelling, mucus production, rashes and also muscle spasms and also there are other symptoms which normally vary from person to person. The most common type of allergens include pollen, mold, Pet dander and dust. Most common type of allergies are food and drug allergies. The causes of allergic reactions are insect bites, jewelry, cosmetics, spices and also other substances.

    Some people have allergies like reactions to temperatures like cold and hot. Sunlight and other environmental triggers also cause allergies . Allergies normally also pass down through families and if both of your parents have allergies then there is a chance then there is also a great chance that you will have those allergies.
