    The Christians who are living in India can adopt children by resort to section 41 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2006. Apart from that there are some other customary regulations allowing them to adopt children specifically in Punjab. There is a special custom among the Syrian Christians of Kerala for adoption of a son-in-law. Where there are no sons, the husband of the youngest daughter is taken in adoption under this tradition.

This book is written by Dr. Sebastian Champappilly and published by Southern Law Publishers. There is no special statute permitting or regulating adoption among Christians in India. In the absence of a statutory or customary adoption approved by courts, foster children are not treated in law as children. On death of the foster parents, their property is distributed among legal heirs of the intestate, to the detriment of foster children.
   
   In the past, persons who wished to adopt a younger child usually approached the Court under the provisions of the Guardians and Wards Act of 1890 to obtain a permission of guardianship for the younger child. Issues arose when the child reached the age of majority. The Guardians and Wards Act order did not apply once the child became a major, so the child did not get the advantages of an adopted son or daughter.
