During the initial stages of flu or cold, place a whole unpeeled grapefruit cut into four pieces in a pot, covered with water. Heat it to boil, stir and add a tablespoon of honey and drink the entire mixture. Brian Berman, MD, Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Maryland University, US says “The simmering produces immune boosters such as flavonoids and vitamin C from grapefruit to water. Drinking it in the form of concoction, holds more punch, and eases sore throat, than a grape juice that has been bought from a regular store.
The body’s healing response could be strengthened through the use of olive oil extract. Studies suggest that the anti-viral qualities of olive oil help in treating cold and flu bugs. Dr.Isaac Mathai, Medical Director, SOUKYA International Holistic Health Center, suggests turmeric or neem leaves as a substitute for olive oil, as obtaining olive leaf extract could be difficult in India.
Bronchitis and congestion could be soothed by a medicated vapour rub. Rubbing the medicated vapours onto congested chest or a blocked nose, could provide temporary relief. Another way to clear a blocked passage is through steam inhalation, as steam makes the mucus thinner and provides relief, says Shalabh Sharma, ENT Consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. Rinsing blocked nose with a saline solution, made at home by dissolving 1 tsp of salt in a cup of lukewarm water could also provide temporary relief from cold.
