I attended a funeral some days back, I was wondering what type of dress they are wearing? Can you tell me about the dress color for men? What is the significance of gifts in the funeral?

While in some years back white clothes were worn for funerals, nowadays all these guests for the funeral wear normally wear black. Men typically wear a black suit with a white shirt and also a black tie, and the dress for women is either a black dress or a black kimono. The black is of a special shade known as pitch black . The deceased family was an adherent to Buddhism, also a set of prayer beads named juzu that may be carried out by the guests. A guest will bring the condolence money in a black and silver decorated envelope. Depending on the relation to the deceased and also to the wealth of the guest, this may be of a value which is equivalent between 3,000 and 30,000 yen.

The guests are now seated, with next of kin which is closest to the front. The Buddhist priest will chant a section from a sutra. The family members will later in each turn offer incense three times to the incense urn in front of deceased. At the same time, these assembled guests will, in turn, also perform the same ritual at the other location which was behind the family members seats. Once the priest has completed the sutra the wake ends. Each of the departing guest is given the gift, that has a value of about half and one quarter of the money which is received from the guest. The closest relatives may then stay and keep vigil with the deceased overnight in the similar room.
