What is the treatment for people living with HIV in India?

    In India different antiretroviral drugs are used for the treatment of AIDS as these can significantly delay the progression from HIV to AIDS. However as in several resource-poor areas, access to this treatment is limited in India; according to a survey 285,000 people were receiving free ARVs in 2009. According to NACO, this shows just over half of the adults estimated to be in need of antiretroviral treatment in India. But, according to WHO's recent treatment guidelines, which suggest that starting treatment earlier, revised estimates may represent that only around 1 in 4 people in need of HIV treatment are recently receiving it. While the coverage of treatment remains unacceptably less, advancements are being made. The government has begun to expand access to ARVs in a number of states; by November 2009 there were 266 reported sites offering antiretroviral therapy.
   
   Increasing access to ARVs also represents that an increasing number of people living with HIV in India are maintaining drug resistance. When HIV becomes resistant to the ARVs the treatment regimen required to be changed to 'second-line' ARVs. As with several other parts of the world, second-line treatment in India is highly expensive as compare to the than first-line treatment. During the 2008, NACO began to roll out government funded second-line antiretroviral treatment in two centers in Mumbai and Chennai, but the coverage was limited.
