There are different types of treatments available for Osteoarthritis. The primary goal in the treatment of Osteoarthritis is the treatment to

    Increase the strength of joints

    Maintain or improve joint movement

Reduce the effect of disabling effects of the disease

    Relieve pain

Apart from other medications Acetaminophen is used as it has less side effects than other drugs. If the pain continues then your doctor might recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs). All of these drugs help in relieving the pain and swelling. Other types of NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. The long term use of NSAIDs can result in stomach problems like ulcers and bleeding. These drugs might increase the risk for heart attacks and strokes. The prescription drug, Celebrex might work well as NSAIDs. As it increases the risk of heart attack and strike, so it is given in lowest possible dose for the shortest period of time.

Corticosteroid which is injected into the joint can be used to reduce swelling and pain. However, the relief might only lasts for a short period of time. Most of the people use the remedies such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. There are some evidence that the supplements can help in reducing the pain, as they do not seem to result in the growth of new cartilage. Some of the doctors recommend a trial period of about 3 months to see whether it is effective or not.
