What positive SEO impact a page gets on keeping keywords in‘?

I was searching if formatting of a page effects ranking and found on too many places that keywords if they’re bold get better ranking. I want to know that how it happens?

    Keeping the repeated keywords in bolder font a few times is good as search engine identifies it as important words and take the page up in ranking when one searches something using those keywords. But it doesn’t mean to bold too many words on a page. Doing so will just penalize your page.
