Bjarni Herjolfsson and his crew were the first known group of Vikings to visit the Americas in the year 985 or 986. He was stationed in Norway and would visit his father in Iceland every year, but one year while visiting Iceland found out that his father had gone to Greenland. While trying to find Greenland he was knocked off course and sighted 3 islands that did not fit the description of Greenland. Instead of searching the area he went headed back to Greenland. It is believed he sighted Newfoundland, Labrador, and Baffin Island. Leif Ericsson heard about Herjolfsson’s sighting and bought a ship from Bjarni. He, along with a crew of 35 people, landed in the Americas in around the year 1000 A.D. and explored the land.
