    The Spanish Civil War occurred from July 17, 1936 to April 1, 1939 between the Republicans, supporters of the Spanish Republic, and the Nationalists, rebels lead by General Francisco Franco. The Nationalists won the war and Franco ruled Spain from 1939 until 1975, when he passed away.
