    The 1918 flu pandemic, better known as the Spanish Influenza occurred from January 1918 to December 1920. It infected an estimated 500 million people and killed 50 to 100 million people. This was equivalent to 3 to 5% of the world population at the time. It is unclear where it originated but the concentration and mobilization during and shortly after World War I helped spread the H1N1 virus.
