Where is the name Canada derived from?
Tags: Canada, derived, name
Canada is from a First Nations word Kanata which means ‘settlement’, ‘village’, or ‘land’. Jacques Cartier was the first known European to use the term when he not only described a village of Stadacona but also for the neighbouring region and the land up to the St. Lawrence River. By 1545 the region was being referred to as Canada in European books and maps.
